The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

Which streets carry the stores?

Main Street does most of the work. The register places three licences on it: 213 Main Street North (RARE Cannabis Co.), 400 Main Street NE (Canna Cabana) and 705 Main Street SW (Bud Mart, licence 812450). The rest are spread over Coopers Boulevard, Mackenzie Way, Meadowbrook Drive, 8 Street SW and Market Street SE. Two chains appear twice: Canna Cabana and Bud Mart each hold a second Airdrie licence.

What decided where they could open?

Council passed its cannabis land use bylaw in September 2018, according to DiscoverAirdrie, and put stores in the same zones that already took liquor stores. Land was sorted into permitted, discretionary and prohibited bands after a public survey and focus groups, where residents said they did not want stores near places children gather. Licence numbers span 778818 to 812450, so the list mixes first-wave stores with recent ones. Check any address against the licence-check guide; the Alberta hub covers province-wide rules.

Cannabis in Airdrie: questions

Can a store open next to a school in Airdrie?

Not by default. The provincial rule is 100 metres from a school, and the City of Airdrie's bylaw allows its development authority to vary that distance case by case, according to an appeal board document on the bylaw.

Why do two Airdrie stores share a brand name?

Chains hold one licence per storefront. Canna Cabana is listed at 6128-403 Mackenzie Way SW (778818) and 101-400 Main Street NE (782204); Bud Mart at 17-1301 8 Street SW (781450) and 600-705 Main Street SW (812450).
