What Calgary's own rules change

Provincial law sets the basics; the city adds spacing. According to the City of Calgary's cannabis store guidelines, a store must stay 150 metres from schools and emergency shelters and generally 300 metres from another cannabis store. The city can relax the store-to-store distance when the shops are on different streets, when a major road or the river lies between them, or when the store is inside an enclosed shopping centre. School distances can be reduced by 10% at most.

  • Public use: smoking, vaping or eating cannabis in a public place is banned and draws a $100 ticket, says the City of Calgary. Private property is allowed, though landlords and condo boards may set stricter rules.
  • Lounges: none are licensed. Festivals may apply for a designated consumption area, subject to a public hearing at Council.
  • Events: according to StratCann, council moved in 2025 toward letting cannabis be sold temporarily at 18+ entertainment events, not at all-ages ones.
  • Stampede: the Calgary Stampede's exhibitor rules keep cannabis off its grounds.

Comparing stores on the same list

Stock comes through the same AGLC system, so the differences are location, hours, staff advice and delivery. RARE and Lake City Cannabis both advertise delivery, and Lake City also ships across Alberta. Late hours are a real point of difference: our profiles show All The Smoke in Thorncliffe open to midnight Thursday to Saturday and Bud Bar Crowfoot to midnight on weekends. The Alberta rules guide covers delivery limits and ID checks; province-wide numbers are on the Alberta hub.

Questions about this list

Can I smoke cannabis in a Calgary park or on the street?

No. The City of Calgary bans cannabis use in public places, including smoking, vaping and edibles, with a $100 ticket. You may use it on private property, subject to your landlord's or condo board's rules.

Are there cannabis lounges in Calgary?

Not at present. The City says no consumption venues are licensed. Festivals and events can apply for a designated area, which needs Council approval after a public hearing.

How close can two Calgary cannabis stores be?

Generally 300 metres apart under the city's Land Use Bylaw guidelines, with exceptions such as stores on different streets or inside an enclosed shopping centre.

Buying in Canada

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

Summary, not legal advice — rules change; check local law.
