The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Buying online

Only from provincially run or authorized retailers, delivered within that province.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Leduc

You have just landed at Edmonton International Airport, which lies beside Leduc, and want to buy cannabis before the drive into the city. Leduc, next door, has five licensed stores on the register.

  1. Head for Discovery Way
Firestone Cannabis is at 4-5310 Discovery Way and Plantlife at 101B-5406 Discovery Way.
  2. Or the 50 Street strip
Canna Cabana is at 103-6207 50 Street and Grass Roots at 104-5906 50 Street. PBG BioPharma, at 102-4101 65A Avenue, carries a licence number from a different series (301841).
  3. Bring photo ID
Alberta's age and possession rules are on the province page.
  4. Keep it in the bag until you are at private property
Inside Canada you may carry up to 30 grams on a domestic flight, the limit that airports such as Fort McMurray's repeat in their traveller guidance.

Where does the airport's ban start?

Immediately. CBC reported that consuming cannabis is banned on Edmonton International Airport lands under a public places bylaw, including buildings, roads and parking lots, so a purchase made in Leduc cannot be opened in the airport car park. The city's own zoning tells you what to expect: retail is permitted in the General Commercial and three industrial districts, which is why the stores sit on strips and business parks, not a main street.

Cannabis in Leduc: questions

Can I take Leduc cannabis on a flight out of the country?

No. Transporting cannabis across Canada's border is a serious offence in both directions, according to Canadian airport traveller guidance.

Does Leduc County have different store rules?

Yes. The county's land use bylaw confines cannabis retail to business and industrial zones and requires a county development permit, according to Leduc County's cannabis page.
