How cannabis is sold in Albert Lea

Albert Lea is reconsidering a cannabis shop it turned down, after the Minnesota Court of Appeals called the denial arbitrary in May 2026.

City registrations

On the register
Five dispensaries

Five listed, four registered

The register lists Aficionados at 2006 E Main Street, Big Dream Organics at 1039 S Broadway Avenue, Black Husky LLC at 2706 Ekko Avenue, The Matchbox Dispensary at 2316 Hendrickson Road and The Smoking Tree at 2718 Bridge Avenue. The city says four are registered, so the fifth entry is either the shop still waiting on a fresh application or a state licence with no city registration behind it. Ask before you drive.

How the first two were picked

The original ordinance registered businesses first come, first served on the timestamp of the state licence. That rule is what the 2026 amendment replaced. State licensed sales began on 16 September 2025; the Minnesota hub holds the rest.
