One of the first two legal adult-use sales in Massachusetts history happened in Northampton. On November 20, 2018, Mayor David Narkewicz bought a cannabis-infused chocolate bar at New England Treatment Access on Conz Street, WBUR reported, and the edible is now preserved in a museum. NETA, listed as New England Treatment Access, is still at 118 Conz Street. A shop in Leicester opened at the same hour, so which sale was first is unclear.

Verdex lists 10 licensed dispensaries here, including Apical on King Street and Galil Greenery on Main Street. Buyers must be 21 with a photo ID.

Where to find them

Conz Street holds four Verdex listings (numbers 2, 2A, 90 and 118), and King Street and Strong Avenue have two each. Alexsofia and Kccs are both on Strong Avenue, and Enlite is out on Damon Road, which has a second listing at number 60. One listing, Ezdelivery on Conz Street, is a delivery business, so it has no counter.

  • Limit: the cap is 2 ounces of flower, or 1,000 mg of THC in edibles, per day.
  • Rules: the Massachusetts guide covers home limits, public use and the lounge licences that do not exist yet.

Voters decide Question 8 on November 3, 2026; a yes vote would end retail sales on January 1, 2028. After the town opened the market, its shops would be among the first to feel a change. Meanwhile, compare package test results, ask staff about strength, and confirm each licence number in the state directory before you buy anything, whichever street you choose.

Questions about this list

Was Northampton really the first place to sell recreational cannabis in Massachusetts?

Northampton and Leicester opened their first adult-use stores on the morning of November 20, 2018. WBUR reported that Mayor David Narkewicz made the first purchase in Northampton, but that it is unclear which sale was first statewide.

Can I use cannabis in Northampton's parks or downtown?

No. Massachusetts prohibits use in public places, and the state had issued no on-site consumption licence as of September 2026. Use is limited to private property where the owner allows it.
