England's regulator now wants a team, not a lone prescriber. In guidance updated in July 2026 the Care Quality Commission says each decision to prescribe cannabis-based medicines should be scrutinized by a multidisciplinary team that includes at least two doctors on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register. A clinic that prescribes them must be registered with the CQC for treatment of disease, disorder or injury, and must notify it if it starts prescribing them or prescribes remotely.
Verdex lists 21 English clinics, nine in London, among them Cantourage Clinic on Bethnal Green Road, Curaleaf Clinic and Integro Clinics on Harley Street, and the Solihull-run Airmed Clinic. Smoking is not permitted, even for prescribed flower.

See the Red ListWhat a CQC rating does and does not tell you
Ratings are the one independent check on how an English clinic runs, but they vary in age and coverage. Among the clinics we checked in September 2026, Curaleaf Clinic, Lyphe Clinic, Mamedica, Zerenia, Cantourage and Integro held Good ratings, some several years old or issued at an earlier address, while Alternaleaf and Verkind were rated Requires improvement in 2026 and several newer registrations had not been inspected at all. Verdex records London 9, Liverpool 2, then single clinics in Taunton, Solihull, Reading, Loughborough, Farnborough, Croydon and Coventry, though most patients are seen by video wherever they live.
- Look up the provider: the CQC's "find a healthcare clinic" search shows the registered address, the regulated activities and the latest report.
- England only: the CQC does not regulate Scotland or Wales, where Healthcare Improvement Scotland and Healthcare Inspectorate Wales inspect independent clinics, and Northern Ireland has its own regulations.
- Named prescriber: ask who prescribes, whether the multidisciplinary review takes place, and if you may use a pharmacy other than the clinic's partner.
The CQC's public findings on one online clinic, Alternaleaf, show what inspectors look for: prescribing in line with legislation, premises and governance. Fees, membership plans and pharmacy ties are compared in our clinic comparison guide, and pharmacies that dispense are on the England pharmacies page.
Questions about this list
Does the CQC regulate cannabis clinics across the UK?
No. The Care Quality Commission regulates clinics in England. In Scotland and Wales other bodies inspect independent clinics, and Northern Ireland has its own regulations. English clinics must register for treatment of disease, disorder or injury.
What does the CQC say about who decides on a cannabis prescription?
In guidance updated in July 2026 it says each decision to prescribe should be scrutinized by a multidisciplinary team that includes at least two doctors on the GMC Specialist Register, and that specialists must keep genuine oversight of their patients.
Can my GP start a medical cannabis prescription in England?
No. Only a doctor on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register can prescribe cannabis-based medicines, so a GP cannot start one. The NHS prescribes rarely, and most patients use a private clinic.

Home grow
Illegal. Growing counts as production of a Class B drug, with a maximum of 14 years in prison; a prescription does not permit cultivation.
