By December 2024 Atlantic City had more cannabis shops than casinos, twelve against nine, the Philadelphia Inquirer counted. Verdex now lists 17 licensed dispensaries, and eight of them are on Atlantic Avenue itself, starting with Everest Dispensary at 1226, and Bakin' Bad is at 2834. Others sit on Arctic and Pacific Avenues, such as High Rollers Dispensary on South Indiana Avenue.

Anyone 21 or older with a government photo ID may buy, whether or not they live in New Jersey, up to 1 ounce of flower or the equivalent per transaction.

A shopping zone, not a boardwalk stroll

Atlantic City has said no to cannabis sales on the Boardwalk, and smoking on the Boardwalk and beach is banned. Shops are confined to a "Green Zone" that the Inquirer described as running along Atlantic and Pacific Avenues between Maryland and Boston Avenues, plus the Orange Loop and parts of Kentucky and Albany Avenues. Because the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority controls the tourism district, applications there may also need its sign-off.

  • Cap: according to law firm Cooper Levenson, Ordinance No. 87 of 2025, adopted on October 22, 2025, caps retailers at 16 (12 standard, 4 microbusiness); Verdex lists 17 entries, so check current status.
  • Tax: 6.625% state sales tax, plus up to 2% local transfer tax where a town has adopted one.
  • Lounges: New Jersey lets Class 5 retailers add a consumption area only with municipal approval; ask a shop before you plan a smoke there.

In late September 2026 federal prosecutors charged a city official who sat on the Cannabis Review Board with soliciting bribes from a dispensary owner, an accusation that names no shop. Read the New Jersey guide before your trip.
