Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB), Government of B.C..

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

  • Edibles and extracts

Max 10 mg THC per edible package; extracts max 10 mg per unit and 1,000 mg per package; topicals max 1,000 mg per package. Quebec bans edibles in the form of candy, desserts or chocolate.

  • Travel

Taking cannabis into or out of Canada is illegal, with penalties of up to 14 years in prison.

How cannabis is sold in Mission

Where are Mission's shops?

Three of the five listed stores are on Lougheed Highway: Boss Cannabis at 29560, Mission Cannabis at 32423 and K.J.'s Best at 32530. Cheeky's is downtown on 1st Avenue, and a second Mission Cannabis is on Cedar Street. Street numbers on Lougheed run from 29560 to 32530, so "on Lougheed" does not mean next door.

Why are there two Mission Cannabis listings?

They are separate addresses, 111-32423 Lougheed Highway and 101-8778 Cedar Street, each with its own register entry. A shared name does not make one licence cover both, so use the address.

Which shop opened first, and was it private?

Not private. Today in BC reported that Mission's first shop was a BC Cannabis Store at 31956 Lougheed Highway, Unit D130, the province's 24th. Verdex's list here covers private stores only.

Does the city limit where stores go?

Its cannabis regulation page allows one store per area in North Mission (Steelhead, Stave Falls, Keystone, Silverhill, Ferndale) and in Hatzic. Council debated a policy admitting both government and private shops, the Mission City Record reported. Whether the five listed addresses fall under those area limits is worth asking the city, because I could not confirm it. Age and tax rules are on the provincial page, British Columbia.

Cannabis in Mission: questions

Is Mission's first cannabis store still the government one?

Today in BC reported it as the province's 24th BC Cannabis Store, at 31956 Lougheed Highway, Unit D130. Check the BC Cannabis Stores locator for its current status.

Are K.J.'s Best in Mission and Coquitlam the same shop?

They are listed at different addresses in different cities, Lougheed Highway in Mission and Barnet Highway in Coquitlam, so each has its own licence.
