Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Penticton
Fourteen is the number of cannabis stores Penticton council will license, and six is what the Verdex register shows, so do not assume every approval is open.
- Downtown or outside. Council split the cap into seven downtown and seven elsewhere, according to the Kelowna Capital News. Most listed addresses (Main Street, Comox Street, Martin Street, Westminster Avenue W) are in the downtown core; Elevated Cannabis on Skaha Lake Road is outside it.
- Old spacing versus new. The cap replaced a scoring matrix, a 300 metre gap downtown and 750 metres elsewhere. Stores approved under the old rules may still look oddly spaced.
- Licence numbers. Unity (450320) carries its LCRB number in the name. Look it up rather than trusting a sign.
- Government or private. Okanagan's first BC Cannabis Store opened in Penticton, per Global News, so a shop marked BC Cannabis Store is the province's, not a private one.
- Same-name chains. Greenery Cannabis Boutique on Main Street and The Green House Cannabis Boutique on Comox Street have similar names but separate addresses.
Why did council drop the buffer zone?
Stores with lower matrix scores were sometimes recommended over higher-scoring ones, which council disliked, the Capital News reported. A fixed number of licences is simpler to explain, and it makes the 14-versus-6 gap the thing to ask the city about. Provincial rules: B.C..
