Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Maple Ridge
The outgoing council amends bylaws so cannabis can be sold in commercial zones, one of its last acts, per Maple Ridge News.
The new council's Cannabis Retail Processing and Evaluation Criteria policy takes effect. It favours government-run shops and asks for 1,000 metres between stores.
The first retail store opens, The Progress reported.
Council votes against the LCRB's proposed government store at 207th Street and Lougheed Highway, then orders staff to draft amendments to the policy and stops accepting applications, per Maple Ridge News.
Why did a council that liked government stores say no to one?
The 2018 policy praised the province's record with controlled substances, yet the 2022 vote rejected a store at a single corner, not the idea of a government shop. Nothing I found shows the reasons beyond the location. The result is a private market: Green Star (22222 Lougheed), Muse (20395), Spiritleaf (22709) and The Local Leaf (20110), plus Cheeky's on 240th Street. B.C. rules.
