Cannabis in Birmingham
Birmingham's two register entries answer to two regulators: a CQC-registered clinic in Edgbaston and a GPhC pharmacy off Dollman Street. A checklist.

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Care Quality Commission.
Possession (no prescription)
Illegal. Cannabis is Class B, with a maximum of five years' imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine; for possession, police may instead give a warning or a penalty notice of up to £90 on the spot.
Prescribed cannabis
Legal when prescribed by a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register and dispensed by a registered pharmacy.
Home grow
Illegal. Growing counts as production of a Class B drug, with a maximum of 14 years in prison; a prescription does not permit cultivation.
Public use
Using non-prescribed cannabis anywhere is illegal, and prescribed cannabis-based products must not be smoked.
Driving
Driving while impaired is illegal everywhere in the UK. England, Scotland and Wales also have drug limits (THC: 2 µg per litre of blood in England and Wales); the limit offense does not apply to drugs taken as prescribed if you are fit to drive. Minimum penalty: a one-year ban.
CBD products
Allowed as food only if linked to an application on the FSA public list (England and Wales) and if controlled cannabinoids such as THC stay within 1 mg per container.
Daily CBD intake
FSA advice: healthy adults should have no more than 10 mg of CBD a day from food; the THC safe upper limit is about 70 µg a day for an adult (July 2025).
Age
No statutory minimum age for a specialist prescription (NHS use includes children with rare epilepsies), but the private clinics in our directory take adults only (18+, or 21+ at Integro). The FSA advises under-18s not to take CBD.

Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Birmingham
The local trap in Birmingham is treating a clinic and a pharmacy as one service, when each answers to a different regulator.
Checks before you book
- Look up the clinic on the CQC site. Elios Clinics at 2 Highfield Road, Edgbaston, has been CQC-registered since 2023 and offers video or in-clinic assessments. Read the rating and the inspection date, not the homepage.
- Look up the pharmacy on the GPhC register. Xeal Dispensary is registered as 9011996 and sits on Vauxhall Trading Estate, Dollman Street.
- Ask who dispenses. A clinic writes the prescription and a separate pharmacy fills it. Xeal dispenses to UK and Channel Islands patients.
- Price the whole route. Elios lists a £20-a-month care subscription, which comes on top of the medicine itself.
Why inspection records matter for pharmacies
The General Pharmaceutical Council's October 2025 review of 25 pharmacies that regularly supply cannabis-based medicines found 17 met every standard and eight did not, with weak oversight of outside prescribers the most common gap. That is why the pharmacy's inspection page is worth opening even when the website looks polished. Costs and ratings across clinics are set out in the UK clinic comparison, and the England page lists other cities.
Cannabis in Birmingham: questions
Which comes first, the clinic or the pharmacy?
The clinic. It assesses you and writes the prescription, and a pharmacy such as Xeal, which dispenses across the UK and to the Channel Islands, fills it. Both work at a distance, so the address matters mainly for regulation.
What does verified mean for Birmingham?
Both Birmingham entries are marked verified on Verdex. The clinic lists a subscription of £20 a month and the pharmacy publishes its GPhC number, and those are the two facts to check at source.
