The rules

Key rules in the United Kingdom

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Care Quality Commission.

  • Possession (no prescription)

Illegal. Cannabis is Class B, with a maximum of five years' imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine; for possession, police may instead give a warning or a penalty notice of up to £90 on the spot.

  • Prescribed cannabis

Legal when prescribed by a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register and dispensed by a registered pharmacy.

  • Home grow

Illegal. Growing counts as production of a Class B drug, with a maximum of 14 years in prison; a prescription does not permit cultivation.

  • Public use

Using non-prescribed cannabis anywhere is illegal, and prescribed cannabis-based products must not be smoked.

  • Driving

Driving while impaired is illegal everywhere in the UK. England, Scotland and Wales also have drug limits (THC: 2 µg per litre of blood in England and Wales); the limit offense does not apply to drugs taken as prescribed if you are fit to drive. Minimum penalty: a one-year ban.

  • CBD products

Allowed as food only if linked to an application on the FSA public list (England and Wales) and if controlled cannabinoids such as THC stay within 1 mg per container.

  • Daily CBD intake

FSA advice: healthy adults should have no more than 10 mg of CBD a day from food; the THC safe upper limit is about 70 µg a day for an adult (July 2025).

  • Age

No statutory minimum age for a specialist prescription (NHS use includes children with rare epilepsies), but the private clinics in our directory take adults only (18+, or 21+ at Integro). The FSA advises under-18s not to take CBD.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Kenilworth

Why a well-scored pharmacy still needs a sound prescriber

Botanical Health Dispensary is an independent, GPhC-registered pharmacy at Camden House, 201 Warwick Road, and Verdex scores it 8.5. It fills prescriptions for medical cannabis. That matters because the General Pharmaceutical Council's October 2025 themed review found that eight of 25 pharmacies supplying these medicines missed at least one standard, and named oversight of outside prescribers and access to patient records among the gaps.

What to do before sending a prescription

Verdex holds one verified profile for the town, and prices are not on the register, so ask for a quote for a month's supply. Ask the pharmacy how it checks the prescriber, whether it can see the patient's record, and what happens if the product is out of stock. Those are the exact weak spots the regulator flagged. The UK prescription guide covers how to get one, and England's city list shows other pharmacies to compare.

Cannabis in Kenilworth: questions

Do I need to live in Kenilworth to use it?

The register describes the pharmacy as filling prescriptions, and prescriptions can come from clinics anywhere in England. Ask how it delivers if you live far away.

Is an independent pharmacy safer than a chain?

Not by itself. The GPhC's review looked at how each pharmacy handles governance, records and outside prescribers, whatever its size.
