The rules

Key rules in the United Kingdom

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Care Quality Commission.

  • Possession (no prescription)

Illegal. Cannabis is Class B, with a maximum of five years' imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine; for possession, police may instead give a warning or a penalty notice of up to £90 on the spot.

  • Prescribed cannabis

Legal when prescribed by a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register and dispensed by a registered pharmacy.

  • Home grow

Illegal. Growing counts as production of a Class B drug, with a maximum of 14 years in prison; a prescription does not permit cultivation.

  • Public use

Using non-prescribed cannabis anywhere is illegal, and prescribed cannabis-based products must not be smoked.

  • Driving

Driving while impaired is illegal everywhere in the UK. England, Scotland and Wales also have drug limits (THC: 2 µg per litre of blood in England and Wales); the limit offense does not apply to drugs taken as prescribed if you are fit to drive. Minimum penalty: a one-year ban.

  • CBD products

Allowed as food only if linked to an application on the FSA public list (England and Wales) and if controlled cannabinoids such as THC stay within 1 mg per container.

  • Daily CBD intake

FSA advice: healthy adults should have no more than 10 mg of CBD a day from food; the THC safe upper limit is about 70 µg a day for an adult (July 2025).

  • Age

No statutory minimum age for a specialist prescription (NHS use includes children with rare epilepsies), but the private clinics in our directory take adults only (18+, or 21+ at Integro). The FSA advises under-18s not to take CBD.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Loughborough

Loughborough has a large university and, on our register, no shop or pharmacy, only a clinic in a village a few miles away, Hathern.

  1. Book a remote assessment
CB1 Medical is CQC-registered, based at 5 Cross Street, Hathern, and offers remote appointments. A specialist doctor decides whether a prescription is appropriate.
  2. Note the fee structure
The register lists a one-off £50 fee that covers follow-ups, so there is no per-appointment charge to weigh. Medicines are extra, and Verdex scores the clinic 8.4.
  3. Use a pharmacy for the medicine
The clinic prescribes; a registered pharmacy dispenses and delivers.
  4. Carry the paperwork
Police can stop and test a driver. The limit for THC is 2 micrograms per litre of blood, and a valid prescription taken as directed offers a defence only if you are not impaired.

Why a village clinic serves a university town

The address is administrative. Hathern is a village a few miles from Loughborough, and the care is delivered remotely, so a student or resident does not travel there. The drug-driving guide explains the limit, and the England page lists clinics elsewhere. Students without a prescription have no legal supply route: possession is a Class B offence. Follow the advice in your prescription about timing, since impairment is judged at the roadside regardless of the paperwork.

Cannabis in Loughborough: questions
