A "free" cannabis prescription in Germany is free only on the doctor's side. Since July 30, 2026 statutory health insurers no longer pay for flower, so even a first consultation promoted at €1 leaves you the pharmacy bill: €6.43 a gram on average in September 2026, per CannaPreis. Verdex lists 14 clinics and platforms, three in Düsseldorf and two in Berlin.

DocNow24 charges about €9 a prescription, CanDoc offers a free questionnaire route or a €35 video call, and MedCanOneStop bundles consultation, payment and pharmacy delivery. Verdex has verified none of them.

The bill and the ruling that reshape the market

Government bill 21/3061 would require personal contact for a first flower prescription, allow telemedicine follow-ups for three quarters after each visit, and ban postal delivery of flower while keeping a pharmacy's own courier. The Bundestag debated it on December 18, 2025 and, as of September 2026, it had not passed. Separately, on March 26, 2026 the Federal Court of Justice (I ZR 74/25) held that a portal advertising treatment by naming conditions breaches the ban on advertising prescription drugs.

Questions about this list

Is an online cannabis prescription legal in Germany?

Yes, as of September 2026. Medical cannabis has been on ordinary prescriptions under the Medical Cannabis Act since April 1, 2024, and nothing in force bans a remote first consultation, according to the Bundestag's summary of the pending bill.

Does German health insurance pay for cannabis flower?

No. The GKV Contribution Rate Stabilization Act ended statutory cover for flower on July 30, 2026, including for earlier approvals. Extracts, dronabinol and nabilone can still be covered after insurer approval, and private insurers follow their own tariffs.

How much does a medical cannabis prescription cost in Germany?

Published first consultations range from about €1 in promotions to about €60, and flower averaged €6.43 a gram at pharmacies in September 2026. A gram a day is roughly €193 a month for flower alone.
