Geneva's pilot trial is run by the association ChanGE, chaired by former Federal Councillor Ruth Dreifuss, with research partners at the University of Geneva and Geneva University Hospitals. Its single outlet, La Cannabinothèque, opened in December 2023 in Vernier, next to the Châtelaine post office.
The trial is for adults living in the canton of Geneva who have used cannabis at least monthly in the six months before joining. It excludes pregnant women, people with a psychiatric diagnosis and people recently treated for problematic use. About 1,500 people were registered in April 2026, and ChanGE warned of a waiting list of more than six months. Products are local and organic, with THC labeled and capped at 20 percent; Le Courrier reported one flower at CHF 12 per gram in 2025.
Visitors and people from neighboring France cannot take part. Outside the trial, Swiss national rules apply: up to 10 grams is not punished for adults, public use brings a CHF 100 fine, and CBD under 1% THC is legal. Medical cannabis requires a prescription.
