How cannabis is sold in Basel-Stadt

Basel-Stadt was the first Swiss canton to start legal cannabis sales in a pilot trial. Weed Care began on January 30, 2023 and sells study cannabis through selected pharmacies. Its central question is whether regulated sales reduce problematic use.

The study was extended by 18 months, from August 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027, and the range widened to include vape liquids and a spray alongside four flower varieties and two hash products. Per-purchase limits apply, and monthly limits depend on THC content. Recruitment is closed, so newcomers cannot buy cannabis legally in Basel through the trial.

For everyone else in Basel, the national rules apply: possessing up to 10 grams is not punished for adults, public use can be fined CHF 100, and CBD products with less than 1% THC are sold legally. Residents of neighboring Basel-Landschaft have their own trial, Grashaus Projects, with shops in Allschwil and Liestal. Medical cannabis requires a doctor's prescription, filled by a pharmacy.
