Weed Care is the cannabis pilot trial of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and the first of Switzerland's legal-sale studies to start. According to Verein Legalize it!, sales began on January 30, 2023. Study cannabis is sold only through selected pharmacies in Basel; the study has not published the pharmacy names on the pages Verdex read, and reports at the start described nine pharmacies.
The central question is whether regulated sales through pharmacies reduce problematic use. The original study ran for 2.5 years and was extended by 18 months: the extension covers August 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027, with follow-up surveys continuing for three years after sales end. Recruitment is closed, so only people already enrolled can buy.
During the extension, the range was widened to include lower-risk forms. Participants can choose among four flower varieties, two hash products, vaporizer liquids and a spray, sold in 5-gram or 1 ml and 10 ml packs. Limits apply per purchase: 10 grams for unmixed products or 2 grams of total THC for mixed products such as vapes and sprays, with a monthly maximum that depends on THC content.
