Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Basel
A traveller crossing from Germany or France into Basel meets a legal cannabis sale that is closed to them by design.
- Accept the residency rule
Weed Care is for people who live in Basel and already use cannabis regularly, shown by a urine test covering at least one use a month over six months. - Do not look for a walk-in counter
Sales are in designated pharmacies, roughly nine of them, to about 400 participants. Nearly 700 people registered and 378 were admitted, and the register lists enrolment as closed. - Know when it ends
Basel-Stadt extended the study to 31 January 2027 in a release of 29 November 2024, adding lower-risk forms such as e-liquids and tinctures plus drug checking. - Look elsewhere for CBD
Products under 1% THC are sold in shops under different rules, set out in the Swiss CBD guide.
The 10 gram ceiling
Participants may take home at most 10 grams a month, and products include flower, hash, vapes and a spray. Radio X reported the project start as 15 September 2022; sales began in January 2023. Weed Care has no shop address on the register because the pharmacies are the outlets. The Basel-Stadt hub covers the canton's other listings.
Cannabis in Basel: questions
Can a German or French resident join Weed Care?
No. Participants must live in Basel, and the register shows enrolment closed. The trial's purpose is to measure what regulated sales change for local users.
Which pharmacies sell?
Roughly nine designated pharmacies dispense to participants, according to trade press, but the register does not list them, so participants get the names from the study team.
