Between 2014 and 2017 Amsterdam closed coffeeshops in phases because they stood within 250 metres of a secondary school, part of a national distance rule that the city itself opposed. Before the closures the city had about 198 shops; roughly 160 to 170 were expected to remain, according to Amsterdam Tourist Information.
Verdex lists 34 coffeeshops. Sales are tolerated, not licensed as such, so none is marked verified. Visitors aged 18 or over can enter with a passport or ID. The best-scored are Sativa on Spuistraat (8.6), Boerejongens on Utrechtsestraat (8.4), The Jolly Joker at Nieuwmarkt (8.4) and Papillon on Van der Helstplein (8.3).

Centrum, De Pijp and Oost: choosing by neighbourhood
The centre is dense. Sativa occupies an 18th-century building on Spuistraat with a Delft-blue interior, Abraxas is a multi-level shop in an alley off Dam Square (Jonge Roelensteeg), and Coffeeshop Central faces Centraal Station on Prins Hendrikkade. Away from the tourist core, Papillon is an old-school neighbourhood shop in the south, Barney's has been on Haarlemmerstraat since 1986, and Best Friends Oost, on Niasstraat in the Indische Buurt, serves Amsterdam-Oost.
- Who owns what: Boerejongens, founded in 2007, has several Amsterdam addresses, so read the street on the listing.
- Menu and prices: use the coffeeshop menu explainer before ordering, and the visitor rules guide for limits and where you can smoke.
- Beyond Amsterdam: other Dutch cities apply residency rules, covered in our city-by-city guide.
The school-distance rule still shapes the map: a shop's long history at an address does not protect it, and the closures were spread over 2014, 2015 and 2017. For the wider region, including Haarlem and Zaanstad, see the North Holland page.
Questions about this list
Why did some Amsterdam coffeeshops close?
Coffeeshops within 250 metres of secondary schools were closed in phases between 2014 and 2017 under a national distance rule. Amsterdam's own research doubted it would work, according to Amsterdam Tourist Information.
Is there an age limit for Amsterdam coffeeshops?
Yes, 18. Staff ask for a passport or national ID at the door. Cannabis sales are tolerated rather than legal, so rules and enforcement are set by the municipality.
