Barney's Coffeeshop

Barney's Coffeeshop occupies a building on Haarlemmerstraat 102 in Amsterdam that the company describes as about 500 years old, and runs a second coffeeshop at Reguliersgracht 27. According to its own history, founders Paul Gould and Nicky Matthews bought their first café in central Amsterdam in 1986 and sold the business to Derry Brett in 1992. Barney's says it has won several High Times Cannabis Cup awards. Its website also links to related businesses: Barney's Uptown bar and The Farm brasserie on the same street, and the Barney's Farm seed company.

Both coffeeshops open every day from 07:00 to 01:00, with holiday exceptions such as a closure on Christmas Day and later openings on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The usual Dutch rules apply. Buyers must be 18 or older with ID, a purchase is capped at 5 grams, and Amsterdam still serves tourists because it has not adopted the residents criterion. Some reviewers say a table inside is reserved for customers who also order drinks, so it is worth checking the house rules before sitting down.

In September 2026 the Haarlemmerstraat shop averaged 4.6 stars from about 5,100 Google reviews. Praise centers on the selection, a more upscale interior and knowledgeable staff who guide first-timers toward milder options; criticism focuses on prices, particularly for hash, and on occasional unfriendly service.
