How cannabis is sold in Gelderland
Gelderland has two municipalities in the national controlled-supply experiment: Arnhem and Nijmegen. All coffeeshops in both cities must participate, and since 7 April 2025 they may sell only cannabis grown by the government-designated growers. The products are sold sealed in neutral packaging with a QR-code leaflet on risks; according to one participating Arnhem shop, an unopened package can only be returned on the day of purchase, because the national track-and-trace system removes sold items overnight.
The switch has changed the offer. Imported hash is no longer allowed, and some visitors, particularly from Germany, have criticized regulated flower as pre-packed and bland, while shops reply that most customers are satisfied. In Nijmegen, Kronkel, a coffeeshop in the Molenpoort since 1986 with a bar, kitchen and roof terrace, is among the most-reviewed options.
Customers must be 18 or older, and a purchase may not exceed 5 grams. Neither Arnhem nor Nijmegen is among the border municipalities that the experiment requires to apply the residents criterion; local door policies were not checked for this listing.
