Magic Truffles in the Netherlands: Legal in Smartshops, While Paddos Are Banned

Psilocybin mushrooms have been illegal in the Netherlands since 2008, but truffles, the underground part of the same fungus, are still on smartshop shelves. What the Opium Act says and what the health service warns about.

Key takeaways

  • Psilocybin mushrooms (paddos) are on List II of the Opium Act: dried ones since 2002, fresh ones since December 2008.
  • Truffles (sclerotia) are not named in the Opium Act, so smartshops may sell them; grow kits are also legal to buy until mushrooms appear above the substrate.
  • A box of truffles cost roughly €10 to €15 according to the Drugs Infolijn; effects start after 20 to 60 minutes and last 3 to 4 hours.
  • Strength varies by batch and variety; shop labels such as "visual" or "energetic" are not accurate, the Drugs Infolijn says.

In the Netherlands you can walk into a smartshop, pay about the price of a lunch and take home a plastic tub of a psychedelic drug. It is not the result of a modern liberalisation. It is the result of a definition.

When the government banned mushrooms in 2008, after several widely reported incidents, at least one of which was later found not to involve mushrooms, according to Jellinek, it did not touch truffles. Eighteen years later the gap is still open, which surprises visitors and worries the health service.

What the law names, and what it leaves out

ProductOpium Act statusWhere it appears
Fresh psilocybin mushroomsBanned, List II, since December 2008Not sold legally
Dried psilocybin mushroomsBanned since 2002 as a preparation of psilocin (Supreme Court ruling); List II since December 2008Not sold legally
Fresh magic truffles (sclerotia)Not listedSmartshops, some online shops
Dried or ground trufflesProhibited as a preparation, per JellinekNot sold legally
Mushroom grow kitsLegal to sell until mushrooms grow above groundSmartshops, online

The Drugs Infolijn, run by the Trimbos Institute, explains the logic in one line: truffles are not mushrooms, so they fall outside the Opium Act. Once the mushrooms come out of a grow kit, they are illegal.

Strength is the main problem. The Drugs Infolijn says truffles differ from one variety and one batch to the next, which makes dosing harder than with most drugs.

What a trip feels like, and what mixing does

The Drugs Infolijn lists the mental effects as more intense colours and sounds, distorted objects, moving patterns that can be seen with eyes closed, swings between strong positive and negative emotions, jumps of thought and a changed sense of time. The body reacts too: relaxed muscles, chills, headache, nausea, thirst, wide pupils, sometimes sweating and dizziness, and a slight rise in heart rate and blood pressure. Effects come in waves and fade gradually.

CombinationWhat the Drugs Infolijn says
Truffles with alcoholRaises the chance of a bad trip
Truffles with cannabisCan strengthen or prolong the trip and make it harder to control
Truffles with cocaine, speed, XTC or GHBLittle is known; unpredictable and negative effects such as anxiety are more likely

Risks the health service puts first

  • A bad trip is the most common problem. Anxiety, suspicion and loss of control of thoughts are more likely when the dose is too high.
  • Psychosis is a real risk for people prone to it. People with depression, anxiety or a psychotic history have a much higher chance of harm, the Drugs Infolijn warns.
  • Do not drive. Effects last three to four hours and you are not sober at the end.
  • Set and setting matter. A calm, trusted place and a sober "tripsitter" are the health service's advice.
  • Memory and concentration problems can follow. Some people report temporary problems and visual "noise" afterwards.

The Drugs Infolijn notes that research on psilocybin for depression and addiction is under way and results look promising, but there is not yet enough evidence for use in healthcare. Trials use close professional guidance, which a smartshop tub does not provide. Some people microdose truffles hoping for benefits; I found no Dutch health-authority guidance that supports it.

Policy has shifted before. I could not confirm any change in the legal position of truffles in 2026, so check the current text of the Opium Act lists before travelling. FAQ

Are magic truffles legal in the Netherlands?

Yes, fresh ones. Truffles are not named in the Opium Act and are sold in smartshops; dried truffles count as a preparation and are prohibited. Psilocybin mushrooms (paddos) are illegal: dried ones since 2002 and fresh ones since December 2008.

What is the difference between magic mushrooms and magic truffles?

They come from the same kind of fungus and contain the same active substances, psilocybin and psilocin. Mushrooms grow above ground; truffles are underground storage bodies. Strength can differ a lot between varieties.

How much do magic truffles cost?

The Drugs Infolijn puts a box at about €10 to €15 in smartshops.

How long do the effects of magic truffles last?

Effects begin after 20 to 60 minutes and last about 3 to 4 hours. You are not sober immediately afterwards, so driving is unsafe.

Is it safe to take magic truffles?

No drug is risk-free. The main risks are a bad trip, psychosis in people who are prone to it, and impaired driving. The health service advises a calm setting, a sober sitter and avoiding use if you have mental health problems.
