How cannabis is sold in South Moravian Region
The South Moravian Region is home to one of the most distinctive medical cannabis programs in Europe. At St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno (FNUSA), the International Clinical Research Center, run jointly with Masaryk University, holds a licence to grow medical cannabis inside the hospital. In April 2024 the first batches, one balanced in THC and CBD and one high in THC, reached patients through the hospital pharmacy, which also makes cannabis capsules. The hospital's Pain Treatment Center, led by Radovan Hřib, saw nearly 500 chronic pain patients for cannabis treatment in 2023.
For everyone else the national rules apply. Adults 21 and over may grow up to three plants and keep 100 grams at home and 25 grams outside since 1 January 2026, but there is no legal sale. Patients need an electronic prescription from a qualified doctor, and since April 2025 general practitioners may prescribe for chronic intractable pain. Insurance covers 90% of the price within quantity limits. People searching for medical cannabis in Brno should ask about FNUSA's pain center or any pharmacy willing to prepare cannabis.
