St. Anne's University Hospital Brno (Fakultní nemocnice u sv. Anny, FNUSA) runs one of the most unusual medical cannabis programs in Europe: it grows cannabis inside the hospital, processes it in its own pharmacy and prescribes it through its pain clinic. The cultivation licence is held by the International Clinical Research Center (ICRC), a joint facility of FNUSA and Masaryk University's Faculty of Medicine, and the hospital calls the in-house grow a world first.
In April 2024 the hospital announced that the first batches from its grow had reached patients. Two batches went to the hospital pharmacy, one with a balanced THC-to-CBD ratio and one high in THC, and doctors decide which a patient receives. The pharmacy prepares cannabis capsules, which the hospital describes as a first in the Czech Republic. Prescriptions come mainly from the hospital's Pain Treatment Center, which saw nearly 500 chronic pain patients for cannabis treatment in 2023, most often for back pain, osteoarthritis and rheumatic conditions. The program is led by Václav Trojan at the cultivation facility, with Martin Šimíček heading the pharmacy and Radovan Hřib the pain center.
Access follows national rules. A doctor with a qualifying specialization issues an electronic prescription, the pharmacy checks the patient's quantity limits in the prescription system, and public insurance covers 90% of the price up to 90 grams of flower per three months, or more with approval from the insurer's reviewing physician.
