The rules

Key rules in Canada

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Cannabis NB (Crown retailer; subsidiary of NB Liquor).

  • Minimum age

18 in Alberta, 21 in Quebec, 19 in all other provinces and territories.

  • Possession

    30 g of dried cannabis or equivalent in public (1 g dried = 5 g fresh, 15 g edible solids, 70 g non-solid products, 570 g beverages, 0.25 g concentrates or 1 seed). Some provinces cap home storage, e.g. 150 g per residence in Quebec and 1,000 g per household in B.C.

  • Home grow

Up to 4 plants per residence under federal law. Prohibited in Quebec. Manitoba passed Bill 34 in June 2024 and home growing became legal there on May 1, 2025 (19+, up to 4 plants per household, grown indoors; gov.mb.ca).

  • Public use

Set provincially: generally allowed where tobacco smoking is in Ontario and B.C. (with exceptions); smoking and vaping banned in all public spaces in Quebec; no public consumption in New Brunswick; private dwellings only in PEI; restricted in Alberta and Nova Scotia; not in vehicles.

storefronts in the Verdex Moncton list, which holds one brand entry

Verdex count, September 2026

Why is Moncton's entry a grower?

The one Verdex entry is Organigram, whose plant and office are at 35 English Drive, per the company. In September 2017 it signed a memorandum of understanding with Cannabis NB, the Crown corporation that supplies the province's adult-use market, according to its SEC filing. So Moncton is a production town as much as a shopping one.

Where do you buy?

In a Cannabis NB store, since New Brunswick has no private retail; see the provincial hub. CTV reported the Mountain Road opening, though its date is not in my notes. CBC reported that British American Tobacco bought a 20 percent stake in Organigram, with a Moncton "centre of excellence" planned, and the company's expansion target was 113,000 kilograms a year against 36,000. Verdex has no per-store entries here yet, so check the Cannabis NB store locator for the address and opening hours before you go.
