A California delivery van can drive into a city where a shop cannot open. The Department of Cannabis Control's regulation 4 CCR section 15416 says a delivery employee may deliver to any jurisdiction in the state, as long as the delivery follows the delivery rules. The address must be a physical one, not on publicly owned land, and not a school, day care centre or youth centre.

Verdex lists 196 delivery listings. Two carry ratings: Humble Root, a Sacramento service operating since 2015 with a $2.99 fee, and Smoakland, an Oakland-born budget service covering the Bay Area, the Central Valley and Sacramento. The rest are DCC register records. Delivery buyers must be 21, or 18 with a physician's recommendation.

Reading a register row: licence number, not service area

Most rows here list no city, because the register gives a licence, not a delivery zone. Non-storefront retailers hold numbers starting C9, for example C9-0000853-LIC for 100 Gram Dash, and one company can hold several, so count licences, not brands. Before you order, find the number in the DCC's licence search and confirm the site shows it.

  • At the door: the driver carries a copy of the retailer's licence, government ID and an ID badge, and checks your ID in person.
  • Payment and menus: an order taken through Instagram or Telegram with a cash drop is a warning sign, however professional the menu looks.
  • Fees and minimums: set by each service. Compare the fee against the tax-inclusive total, as the state's 15% excise tax and local taxes apply to delivery too.
  • Storefronts that deliver: shops with a counter are on our California dispensaries page, under a different licence type.

The DCC warns that untested product can carry mold, pesticides or mycotoxins. Our guide to spotting illegal delivery ranks the red flags, and the California licensed-versus-illegal guide shows what a lawful receipt contains.

Questions about this list

Can a California delivery service deliver to a city that bans dispensaries?

Yes. The Department of Cannabis Control's regulation 4 CCR section 15416 lets a delivery employee deliver to any jurisdiction in California, provided the delivery follows the state rules. The address cannot be a school, day care centre, youth centre or publicly owned land.

How do I check that a delivery service is licensed?

Search the licence number in the Department of Cannabis Control's licence search. Non-storefront retailers hold numbers beginning C9. A service that cannot give a number, or takes orders only through social media for cash, is likely unlicensed.

What ID does a California delivery driver check?

Your government-issued ID, in person at the door, to confirm you are 21 or a patient with a physician's recommendation. Drivers carry a copy of the retailer's licence, their own government ID and an ID badge.
