Plain-language summary. The regulator is Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
Possession (no prescription)
Illegal. Cannabis is Class B, with a maximum of five years' imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine; for possession, police may instead give a warning or a penalty notice of up to £90 on the spot.
Prescribed cannabis
Legal when prescribed by a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register and dispensed by a registered pharmacy.
Home grow
Illegal. Growing counts as production of a Class B drug, with a maximum of 14 years in prison; a prescription does not permit cultivation.
Public use
Using non-prescribed cannabis anywhere is illegal, and prescribed cannabis-based products must not be smoked.
Driving
Driving while impaired is illegal everywhere in the UK. England, Scotland and Wales also have drug limits (THC: 2 µg per litre of blood in England and Wales); the limit offense does not apply to drugs taken as prescribed if you are fit to drive. Minimum penalty: a one-year ban.
CBD products
Allowed as food only if linked to an application on the FSA public list (England and Wales) and if controlled cannabinoids such as THC stay within 1 mg per container.
Daily CBD intake
FSA advice: healthy adults should have no more than 10 mg of CBD a day from food; the THC safe upper limit is about 70 µg a day for an adult (July 2025).
Age
No statutory minimum age for a specialist prescription (NHS use includes children with rare epilepsies), but the private clinics in our directory take adults only (18+, or 21+ at Integro). The FSA advises under-18s not to take CBD.

Does an Edinburgh address mean an Edinburgh clinic?
Medicann has its registered office at 1-3 Dalhousie Terrace, EH10 5NE, but every appointment is held by video, so the address is paperwork rather than a waiting room. Medicann (Scotland) Limited was incorporated on 26 March 2025, according to Companies House, although the brand began in the Channel Islands in 2019. Search results describe it as regulated by Healthcare Improvement Scotland. Verdex could not open the register entry, so look it up yourself before paying anything.
What do you pay before the medicine?
The online eligibility form and first consultation are free, follow-ups and repeat prescriptions carry no fee, and an approved prescription can go out the same day. The catch is the medicine bill, which depends on the pharmacy and the product. One-star reviews from the same weeks describe missing deliveries and slow replies. The prescription guide compares clinic models, and the Scotland page covers the country's other places.
Cannabis in Edinburgh: questions
Is Medicann only for Edinburgh residents?
No. It takes patients across the UK and the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, all by video.
Can I walk into the Dalhousie Terrace office?
Do not count on it. The address is the company's registered office, and the service runs online.
