Purple and Exotic Weed in Colombia: What Is Legal to Buy

"Morada" and "exótica" are sales labels, not legal categories. Where the 20 g personal dose ends, why delivery is trafficking, and the only legal way to buy cannabis in Colombia.

This guide is about Colombia — not the country you picked in the header.

Key takeaways

  • Purple buds owe their colour to anthocyanin pigments; Colombian law treats all marijuana the same whatever its colour or brand.
  • Carrying up to 20 g of marijuana for personal use is not punishable (Law 30 of 1986, art. 2, upheld in ruling C-221 of 1994).
  • Selling, offering or supplying marijuana is trafficking under art. 376 of the Penal Code: 4 to 6 years in prison for up to 1,000 g, as printed in the code.
  • "Exotic" delivery services are ordinary sales in a nicer package, with no lab test or licence behind them.
  • The only legal way to buy cannabis is on prescription at a licensed pharmacy.

Purple is a pigment. In Colombian law it is not a category, a grade or a loophole, and neither is "exotic", "boutique" or "premium". Sellers use marihuana morada and marihuana exótica to suggest a rarer, better and somehow more legitimate product. The law does not read the labels.

Why buds turn purple, and what the colour cannot tell you

The colour comes from anthocyanins. A 2023 paper in Antioxidants (Bassolino and colleagues, Italy) identified cyanidin-3-rutinoside as the main anthocyanin in the leaves and flowers of Cannabis sativa. A 2025 study in the Journal of Cannabis Research (University of Wisconsin-Madison) grew purple-pigmented plants at constant temperatures from 0.5 to 22 °C. Anthocyanin peaked at 8 and 15 °C, while CBD content and flower weight tracked plant maturity instead.

So the pigment responds to growing conditions and has its own regulation. Neither study tested whether purple flowers are stronger, and I found no evidence that colour predicts THC. A seller who links "morada" to potency or quality is selling a story.

What Colombian law recognises, and what it ignores

Law 30 also says a quantity is not a personal dose when it is carried to be sold or distributed, "whatever its amount". The 20 g figure is therefore a shield for a user and no guarantee for someone who carries 15 g plus scales and bags. For how the dose interacts with police powers and city park bans, see our guide to whether weed is legal in Colombia.

Exotic delivery is an ordinary sale in a nicer package

Article 376 of the Penal Code punishes whoever, without permission, sells, offers, acquires, finances or supplies a dependence-producing drug, except for the personal dose. The tiers, as amended by Law 1453 of 2011, depend on the quantity.

Quantity of marijuanaPrison (art. 376, current text)Fine
Up to 1,000 g64 to 108 months2 to 150 monthly minimum wages
1,000 g to 10,000 g96 to 144 months124 to 1,500 monthly minimum wages
Above 10,000 g128 to 360 months1,334 to 50,000 monthly minimum wages

A courier on a motorbike carrying a few jars falls in the first tier. The buyer with under 20 g is covered by the dose exemption, but the person who took the order is not. I found no reported case involving customers of a delivery app, so I cannot say how prosecutors treat repeat buyers. Growing is separate: art. 375 punishes unlicensed plantations of more than 20 plants (64 to 108 months for more than 20 and up to 100 plants, 96 to 216 months above that), and Law 30 defines a plantation as more than twenty.

Nothing about "exotic" weed is tested

Licensed derivative manufacturers must measure THC, CBD and CBN with validated methods in every harvest they receive and every lot they produce (Decree 811, art. 2.8.11.2.7.5). A grey-market jar carries no such duty and no lab report you can check. I found no Colombian dataset on pesticides or mould in street cannabis, so the risk is unmeasured, not absent. Studies from other markets are summarised in our piece on pesticides in illegal versus legal cannabis, and fake online shops are a separate risk when you pay in advance.

  1. See a physician
The doctor decides whether a cannabis-based product fits and writes the prescription.
  2. Go to a licensed pharmacy
Registered medicines and magistral preparations are dispensed by pharmacies, not by shops or apps.
  3. Check the product
It should show THC and CBD content and a sanitary registration or magistral label.

Dried flower became a recognised medical product under Decree 1138 of 2025, but I could not confirm that final technical rules for flower had been issued by September 2026, as our medical cannabis guide explains. Pharmacies that dispense compounded cannabis are listed on the Colombia pharmacies page; the Colombia hub has the wider picture.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check the current text of Law 30 of 1986 and the Penal Code on the Función Pública legal database.

FAQ

What is marihuana morada?

Purple-coloured cannabis. The colour comes from anthocyanin pigments, which in one 2025 study accumulated most at constant temperatures of 8 and 15 °C. The colour is a growing condition and a marketing label; Colombian law does not distinguish it from other marijuana.

Is purple weed stronger?

I found no study showing that purple flowers contain more THC. The 2025 Wisconsin study found that pigment responded to temperature while CBD and yield followed plant maturity. Potency can only be read from a lab report.

How much marijuana can you carry in Colombia?

Up to 20 g of marijuana or 5 g of hashish counts as a personal dose under art. 2 of Law 30 of 1986, and the Constitutional Court held in C-221 of 1994 that carrying it for personal use cannot be punished. The amount is not a personal dose if it is for sale or distribution.

Is it legal to get weed delivered in Colombia?

The seller commits trafficking under art. 376 of the Penal Code, which covers selling, offering, acquiring and supplying. A buyer with under 20 g is within the personal dose exemption, but there is no legal shop or delivery service for adult-use cannabis.

Can I buy exotic cannabis in a Colombian pharmacy?

Pharmacies dispense registered medicines and magistral preparations on prescription, not strains marketed as exotic. Dried flower was authorised in principle by Decree 1138 of 2025, with the technical rules not confirmed as final by September 2026.
