Cannabis in Cardiff

Cardiff has no cannabis shop front: one Llanedeyrn pharmacy handles collection, and both local clinics work by video.

The rules

Key rules in the United Kingdom

Plain-language summary. The regulator is Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.

  • Possession (no prescription)

Illegal. Cannabis is Class B, with a maximum of five years' imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine; for possession, police may instead give a warning or a penalty notice of up to £90 on the spot.

  • Prescribed cannabis

Legal when prescribed by a doctor on the GMC Specialist Register and dispensed by a registered pharmacy.

  • Home grow

Illegal. Growing counts as production of a Class B drug, with a maximum of 14 years in prison; a prescription does not permit cultivation.

  • Public use

Using non-prescribed cannabis anywhere is illegal, and prescribed cannabis-based products must not be smoked.

  • Driving

Driving while impaired is illegal everywhere in the UK. England, Scotland and Wales also have drug limits (THC: 2 µg per litre of blood in England and Wales); the limit offense does not apply to drugs taken as prescribed if you are fit to drive. Minimum penalty: a one-year ban.

  • CBD products

Allowed as food only if linked to an application on the FSA public list (England and Wales) and if controlled cannabinoids such as THC stay within 1 mg per container.

  • Daily CBD intake

FSA advice: healthy adults should have no more than 10 mg of CBD a day from food; the THC safe upper limit is about 70 µg a day for an adult (July 2025).

  • Age

No statutory minimum age for a specialist prescription (NHS use includes children with rare epilepsies), but the private clinics in our directory take adults only (18+, or 21+ at Integro). The FSA advises under-18s not to take CBD.

How it works

How cannabis is sold in Cardiff

Two clinics, no shop fronts

HIW's register names two clinics. Cannabis Clinic Cardiff is registered at Barry, not in the city, and Canna Clinic sits at 217A Cathedral Road in Pontcanna, registered on 18 March 2024 and not yet inspected when Verdex checked. Consultations are held by video, which is why Welsh patients often rely on postal pharmacies in England.

How the Hopwoods route runs

The pharmacy works with Curaleaf: check eligibility with the team or the partner clinic, hold a private video assessment, and, if a prescription is issued, collect it at Llanedeyrn. Its GPhC premises number is 9011088. Hopwoods does not publish consultation fees, medicine prices or cannabis opening hours, and Verdex found no public reviews of that service, so ask before you go. The UK prescription guide covers costs, and Wales lists the other towns.

Cannabis in Cardiff: questions

Can I pick up a prescription in Cardiff?

Yes, at Hopwoods Pharmacy, if a specialist has issued a private prescription and it is sent there. There is no walk-in supply.

Are Cardiff clinics regulated differently from English ones?

Yes. Welsh independent clinics register with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales rather than the CQC, though pharmacies stay with the GPhC.
