About Alternaleaf
Melbourne-based telehealth clinic in the Montu group: free nurse screening, then a doctor consult by phone or video for adults across Australia.
Alternaleaf is an online telehealth clinic based in East Melbourne that assesses adults anywhere in Australia for prescription treatment, including medicinal cannabis. The operating company named on its site is Alternaleaf Australia Pty Ltd, and the clinic is part of the Montu group, which search results date to 2019; Alternaleaf itself launched in 2021. The site says it does not offer general practice services.
The process has three steps: an online pre-screening questionnaire, a free nurse call of about 20 minutes, and, if the patient appears eligible, a doctor consultation of about 10 minutes by phone or video. Eligibility criteria listed on the site include a condition lasting at least three months and earlier treatments that did not work or caused side effects. It says people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have a history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or psychosis, are not suitable. Final decisions rest with the AHPRA-registered practitioner.

Because Australian law bans advertising prescription medicines to the public, the site does not name products, and prices of any medicine prescribed are separate from the consultation fee. In April 2024 the TGA began Federal Court proceedings against Montu Group Pty Ltd, Alternaleaf Pty Ltd and a director over alleged unlawful advertising; the case is listed on our Red List and we did not find a published outcome. On Trustpilot the clinic scores 4.4 from about 1,200 reviews; recent comments mostly praise attentive doctors, while critical ones mention a dismissive consult and a price rise when a product went out of stock.

Is Alternaleaf legal?
It is a telehealth clinic whose AHPRA-registered doctors can prescribe medicinal cannabis through TGA access pathways. Separately, the TGA has alleged unlawful advertising by Montu Group and Alternaleaf Pty Ltd in Federal Court proceedings started in April 2024; that case concerns advertising, and we did not find a ruling.
