3,021 Thai Cannabis Shop Licences End on 31 December

Key takeaways

  • The DTAM Medical Cannabis GIS feed listed 8,923 active cannabis shops on 29 September 2026; 3,021 show a licence expiry of 31 December 2026.
  • Another 3,392 expire on 31 December 2027 and 2,343 on 31 December 2028, so almost every licence ends on a year-end.
  • Five provinces hold 53% of shops: Bangkok 1,685, Phuket 1,051, Chonburi (Pattaya) 814, Surat Thani (Samui) 712, Chiang Mai 472.
  • Renewal since 1 May 2026 requires a medical-style setup, so the December cohort is the first big test.

Thailand has been debating what happens to its cannabis shops for a year. Almost nobody has published the calendar. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM) does, in machine-readable form, behind its Medical Cannabis GIS dashboard. Verdex read the feed on 29 September 2026 and counted.

The expiry calendar: three year-ends

The map shows a wall of year-end dates rather than a spread, and the feed does not say why. About 100 active shops carry an expiry date that is already past or an obvious typo (years such as 0007 or 0226), and 13 have none recorded.

Where the shops are, and who renews first

Chonburi has the largest share of its shops (39%) expiring this year, ahead of Bangkok at 34% and Phuket at 27%. Surat Thani is the reverse: 46% of its shops run to 2028. The map does not split islands from mainland, so Samui cannot be read separately.

What renewal now requires

Ministerial Regulation No. 2 B.E. 2569, gazetted on 30 April 2026, applies to renewal applications (existing licences run to their expiry). A shop must show a qualifying business credential, DTAM-trained staff during all opening hours and an odour and smoke elimination system. For a licensee previously suspended for breaching health ministry notifications, Article 11 tells DTAM to consider not renewing. The details are in our guide to what B.E. 2569 requires.

The cabinet-approved bill, covered in our September report, would let existing licences run to expiry, so the December cohort tests the rules before any law passes. Shop counts by province are in this breakdown. Shop-side compliance is in our guides to Bangkok shops and Phuket; the current visitor rules are in Thailand cannabis rules for tourists.

FAQ

How many cannabis shops are there in Thailand in 2026?

DTAM's map listed 8,923 active cannabis shops on 29 September 2026, plus 384 other active premises (excluding farm plots). In April 2026 DTAM had reported 11,386 outlets operating legally, so the count has fallen or is defined differently.

When do Thai cannabis licences expire?

Almost all on 31 December of 2026, 2027 or 2028: 3,021, 3,392 and 2,343 active shops respectively on the map.

Which province has the most cannabis shops?

Bangkok with 1,685 active shops on the map, then Phuket with 1,051, Chonburi (which includes Pattaya) with 814, Surat Thani (which includes Samui) with 712 and Chiang Mai with 472.

Can a shop renew its licence automatically?

No. Under the regulation gazetted on 30 April 2026, renewal requires a qualifying credential, DTAM-trained staff on site and proper storage, flower shops must run odour control, and for a licensee previously suspended for breaching the notifications Article 11 tells DTAM to consider not renewing.

Is the DTAM map an official record?

It is DTAM's own dashboard, but the data feed Verdex read carries a 'dev' label. Verify a specific licence on the dashboard before relying on it.
