Plain-language summary. The regulator is ANVISA (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária).
Possession
Up to 40 g or six female plants is presumed personal use (STF, 26 June 2024): administrative warning and educational measure, no criminal record; police may still seize.

Not authorized outside individual court orders (habeas corpus); the six-plant figure is a presumption for policing, not a permission.

How did a Paraíba association get a growing licence?
The Federal Justice court in Paraíba granted an injunction that allowed the association to grow and process cannabis for exclusively medicinal use, Jornal da Paraíba reported, valid until Anvisa takes a definitive position. The case number shows a 2017 filing. Polêmica Paraíba later called it the only entity in the country that can grow the plant, with more than 750 patients, but I could not date that report.
What has changed nationally?
The Supreme Court ruled on 26 June 2024 that possession of up to 40 grams or six female plants is presumed personal use and not a crime, though police can still act on other evidence. In January 2026 Anvisa's new rules allowed legal entities to grow cannabis for medicines and science and let compounding pharmacies sell cannabidiol formulations. None of that turns a shop into a lawful seller; recreational sale stays outside the law. See the Brazil page.
Cannabis in João Pessoa: questions
Can a visitor join Abrace Esperança?
The association serves member patients with prescriptions; nothing in what I read offers walk-in access to visitors.
Does the 40 gram rule allow buying cannabis in Brazil?
No. It only sets a presumption of personal use for possession; sale remains unlawful.
