Abrace Esperança (Associação Brasileira de Apoio Cannabis Esperança) is a non-profit patient association in João Pessoa, Paraíba, and the first in Brazil to grow and process cannabis for its members under a court order. The Federal Court in Paraíba recognized its right to cultivate and manipulate cannabis exclusively for medicinal purposes and to distribute the extracts to associated patients (case 0800333-82.2017.4.05.8200).
The path was not smooth. After ANVISA challenged the arrangement, the Federal Regional Court of the 5th Region suspended operations and, on 4 March 2021, lifted that suspension following a site visit by the rapporteur, giving the association about four months to submit projects and adapt its structure under ANVISA supervision. In August 2023 the association reported a final win in the higher courts; its founder said at the time that the case would return to João Pessoa and that it had more than 47,000 members.
Membership requires a prescription, and associations are not allowed to sell to the general public. ANVISA's RDC 1.014/2026 created a dedicated framework for non-profit patient associations, which bars commercialization and requires traceability; how existing court-backed associations fit into it was still being debated in September 2026.
