Look up a licenseHow cannabis is sold in Johannesburg
A visitor landing at OR Tambo who has read that South Africa "legalised dagga" should learn the catch before Sandton: growing and holding at home is allowed for adults, selling is not.
- Know what changed
The Constitutional Court's Prince ruling of 18 September 2018 protected private use, and President Ramaphosa signed the Cannabis for Private Purposes Act on 28 May 2024. Adults aged 18 and over may possess and grow it privately; sales remain illegal. - Buy equipment, not product
Grow Guru is a grow shop established in 2012 with stores in Johannesburg and Gqeberha and nationwide delivery of hydroponic gear. The register gives no street address for it. - Use CBD within the limit
Over-the-counter CBD is capped at a 20 mg daily dose under SAHPRA rules, as retailers such as Clicks apply. - Skip the "dispensaries"
Cannabis sold across a counter has no licence behind it; see our grey-market guide.
What a foreign visitor risks
The Act protects private, adult use, and draft regulations were published for comment, according to the South African Human Rights Commission. It does not turn a hotel room or a street into a private space. Our Act explainer covers public use, and the Gauteng page lists the licensed producers around Johannesburg.
