Hemporium opened in 1996 and has lobbied for years to let farmers grow industrial hemp. The Cape Town company runs a concept store and offices at 15 Bell Crescent, Westlake Business Park, an online shop and wholesale supply. Its range goes well beyond CBD: hemp fabric and clothing, a skincare line the company says it has made for about 25 years, hemp stalk products, food seeds and a cannabinoids section.
It also pioneered hemp building in South Africa, with projects such as The House that Hemp Built in Noordhoek and a hemp house in the Bo-Kaap. Hemporium's profile notes that opening hours were not published, so call before visiting.

Two thresholds that get confused
Farm hemp and shop CBD follow different laws with different THC ceilings.

The 2% ceiling lets farmers keep a crop testing at, say, 1% THC that would once have been written off, according to the Department of Agriculture via SAnews. It does not legalize selling hemp flower to consumers, and a hemp permit is an agricultural permit; Mayet & Associates counts about 2,031 issued since 2022.
Over the counter, Schedule 0 CBD is capped at 20 mg daily and 600 mg per pack, with minor health claims only. Anything stronger is Schedule 4 and needs a prescription. Hemporium's profile notes that CBD sold over the counter still has to meet those Schedule 0 conditions. Did South Africa make hemp flower legal to sell in 2025?
No. Since December 1, 2025 hemp may contain up to 2% THC in leaves and flowering heads, but that is an agricultural rule for permitted farmers. Selling smokable hemp flower to the public is not covered by a hemp permit.
How much THC can a CBD product from a shop contain in South Africa?
At most 0.001% to stay outside the Schedule 6 THC entry, according to SAHPRA's 2020 notice. Over-the-counter CBD also has a daily dose ceiling of 20 mg and a pack ceiling of 600 mg.
Does a hemp shop need a SAHPRA licence to sell CBD?
No retail licence is needed for Schedule 0 CBD, according to the Traditional & Natural Health Alliance's summary of the 2020 rules. The importers, manufacturers and wholesalers upstream do need SAHPRA licences.
