In Portugal a cannabis clinic is optional. Any registered physician may prescribe an Infarmed-authorized cannabis product for an approved condition, and only a pharmacy can dispense it, so a clinic sells consultations, not cannabis. Verdex lists two: Clinic4you, a Coimbra private clinic offering in-person medical cannabis consultations with a full clinical assessment among many other specialties, and Kanab Clinic, a telemedicine service for consultations by phone or video. Neither holds stock. Prescriptions have risen from 4,143 in 2024 to 7,023 in 2025, and reached 5,413 in the first half of 2026, according to Infarmed data reported by Observador.

What a Portuguese clinic can and cannot do

Conventional treatment must have failed or caused significant side effects first, and the condition must be on Infarmed's list (Deliberation 11/CD/2019):

  • spasticity from multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury;
  • chemotherapy, radiotherapy or antiviral nausea and vomiting;
  • appetite loss in palliative care for cancer or AIDS;
  • chronic pain linked to cancer or the nervous system;
  • Tourette syndrome, severe childhood epilepsies such as Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut, and treatment-resistant glaucoma.

The prescription follows narcotics rules and goes to any pharmacy, which may need days to order the product. Dried flower is authorized for vaporization only, and prices are not reimbursed for most products. Verdex found no official guidance on foreign prescriptions, so bring your records and ask the pharmacy before travelling.

Clinics are healthcare providers, so before booking check that the establishment is registered with the Entidade Reguladora da Saúde (ERS), which publishes a searchable register of providers, and that the doctor is registered with their professional order. A clinic that promises a prescription before an assessment is a warning sign. Questions about this list

No. Any registered physician can issue the special prescription for an Infarmed-authorized product when standard treatments have failed for an approved condition. A clinic is a convenience, not a legal requirement, and pharmacies do the dispensing.

Which conditions qualify for medical cannabis in Portugal?

Infarmed's Deliberation 11/CD/2019 lists spasticity in multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury, chemotherapy nausea, appetite loss in palliative care, chronic pain linked to cancer or the nervous system, Tourette syndrome, severe childhood epilepsies and resistant glaucoma.

Can I smoke prescribed medical cannabis flower in Portugal?

No. Infarmed authorized the dried flowers for vaporization, so smoking them is outside the authorization, according to the products' approval as summarized by the Portuguese Medical Cannabis Observatory.
