The hospital pharmacy of the General University Hospital in Prague (Všeobecná fakultní nemocnice, VFN) is one of the Prague pharmacies that prepares medical cannabis. In November 2020 it announced that, in response to demand from its own clinics and outside patients, it would start preparing cannabis both for vaporization and for oral use, running trial preparation in December 2020 and moving to full operation from January 2021. For this it opened a new laboratory for hazardous drugs, equipped to protect pharmacists and assistants handling potent substances.
The pharmacy serves the public through three dispensaries in Prague 2. Dispensary I at the main hospital entrance, U Nemocnice 2, is open Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 18:00. Dispensary II in the Urology Clinic building at Ke Karlovu 6 opens Monday to Thursday 8:00–17:00 and Friday until 15:30. Dispensary III in the Faculty Polyclinic at Karlovo náměstí 32 opens Monday to Thursday 7:30–18:00 and Friday until 16:00. The pharmacy also offers free medication consultations.
Medical cannabis in the Czech Republic is an individually prepared medicine. A doctor with a qualifying specialization writes an electronic prescription marked as a highly addictive substance, stating THC and CBD content; since April 2025 general practitioners can prescribe for chronic intractable pain, and prescriptions may cover up to three months. Insurance pays 90% of the price up to 90 grams of flower per three months. Czech pharmacists' guidance notes that any pharmacy may dispense cannabis without a special licence, but hospital pharmacies such as VFN's are often the most reliable option for people seeking medical cannabis in Prague. Calling ahead about stock is sensible.
