About SCRIPT study (Bern, Biel, Lucerne)

Pilot trial selling cannabis with counseling in unnamed pharmacies in Bern, Biel and Lucerne; enrollment closed, sales until Oct 2028.

SCRIPT, short for Safer Cannabis Research in Pharmacies randomized controlled Trial, is the joint cannabis pilot trial of the Universities of Bern and Lucerne, run in the cities of Bern, Biel and Lucerne. Participants buy cannabis products made for the study in selected pharmacies and receive counseling with their purchases. The study examines how that combination of sales and advice affects consumption and health, including whether people move away from smoking.

The pharmacies are not named publicly, for security reasons, so there is no storefront to visit unless you are enrolled. Sales are non-profit: pharmacies cover their costs but make no margin, products come in neutral packaging, and the pharmacies may not advertise. Reports on the Bern arm describe a range of four flowers, two resins, two tincture sprays and two e-liquids.

The window to join closed on March 17, 2025, and no new registrations are accepted. The study has been extended: participants can buy at pharmacies until October 2028, and research continues to the end of 2029. First results were presented on September 7, 2026. The work is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Tobacco Prevention Fund.

For anyone searching for legal cannabis in Bern, Biel or Lucerne, the honest answer is that SCRIPT is limited to people already in the study. Everyone else remains under the general rules: possessing up to 10 grams is not punished, but public use can bring a CHF 100 fine.
